Finding Jesus around the table at Minot Vincent

By: Rebecca Trefz, Dakotas UMC

"A lot of how Jesus engaged in ministry was around the table with people, and so we want to build those relationships over time," said Rev. Mark Ehrmantraut, pastor of Vincent UMC in Minot, North Dakota.

The Vincent congregation is seeking to follow Jesus' example through its dinner ministry. Currently held on the last Monday of the month, this Fresh Expression aims to feed people physically, relationally, and spiritually.

"Over a weekend, because of food insecurity, there may be a lot of people that don't get to eat right. Monday seemed like a really good day for people to be able to come in and get a good warm meal. It's also important [to do it] at nighttime because kids can come - they're not in school. They're getting their meal at school, but now they can also come and have a meal at nighttime, "explained Becky Nelson, a lay member of Vincent and volunteer with the dinner ministry.

In addition to the meal, conversation, fellowship, and relationship-building are important parts of the gathering. After people have gotten their food and had some time to visit, a "Jesus story" – a short message or Bible story—is shared.

"There's no expectation to stay for the Jesus story, but people don't leave. Our experience so far is that they've wanted to be a part of that," said Pastor Mark.

One of the unique characteristics of Fresh Expressions is a "Jesus story." A Fresh Expression is meant to be a community of belonging—primarily for those not yet part of a church. It is grounded in building relationships with persons who might not typically engage in "traditional" church programs and opening the door for them to get to know Jesus. The dinner church model is one way to do that.

"This isn't about just the people who are already churchgoers about building community and new communities, engaging new people, and we want to be intentional about doing that because that's who God is calling us to be," said Pastor Mark.

Sharing a meal, stepping outside their comfort zone to make new connections, and offering a bit of what they've found in a relationship with Christ has stirred a sense of purpose and possibility in thisß congregation.

"God willing, we're living out the greatest commandment. We're loving God and loving our neighbor, however and whatever that looks like. The goal is that people know they're welcome," said Pastor Mark.

"I'm thankful for the opportunity, and I'm excited," said Nelson. "I hope other churches see what we're doing and get the idea, and it catches on and grows."

Individuals and churches interested in learning more about Fresh Expressions are invited to join the Dakotas-Minnesota Fresh Expressions team as they restart their monthly Zoom meetings on September 19th at 6:30 p.m. central (5:30 p.m. mountain). This monthly gathering on the third Thursday of the month is meant to be a time of learning, sharing ideas and resources, and encouraging one another in this Kingdom work. See the Conference calendar and upcoming This Week @ Dakotas for the Zoom link.
