Janet M. Lewis, 94, wife of retired Bishop William B. Lewis, died June 24 in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

With her husband, the Lewises served 33 years in the former Southern Illinois Conference prior to Bishop Lewis’ election to the episcopacy in 1988. He served two quadrennia as Bishop of the Dakotas Conference, where he retired in 1996.

Janet earned a B.S. in Elementary Education and taught elementary school until 1969. While Janet valued her years as an educator, her most cherished “career” role was as the supportive wife to a United Methodist pastor and Bishop. She nourished and encouraged his educational and career aspirations while raising their children throughout their many appointments until “their” retirement in 1996.
