New place to greet new faces at Spirit Lake Ministry Center

After an extensive seven-month remodel, a 53-year-old quonset has become the new worship center and dining facility for the Spirit Lake Ministries, located near Wood Lake on the Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota.

A dedication of the new Arthur Hall at Spirit Lake Ministry Center is planned for May 21 at noon. The dedication will begin with lunch, then Dakota Drum, representatives from the Spirit Lake Tribal Council and conclude with a short dedication.

The quonset started its life as a Lutheran Church in the early 60s at the Dakota's Youth Ranch, a Bible camp for youth from the reservation. After the Dakotas Annual Conference purchased the property, the quonset became a storage warehouse, food pantry/clothing closet, sleeping area for volunteer teams and a tool room.

The new worship space, a dream of Mike and Libby Flowers, co-directors at Spirit Lake, became a reality after a successful fundraising campaign. With the help of donors from all over the country, many having volunteered on the reservation in past years, and two significant donations, the dream became a reality.  Arthur Hall was completed on Friday, March 25th, just in time for 47 of our friends and neighbors to attend an Easter meal and the first United Methodist worship service on the reservation.

Each week on Sunday evening, Pastor Mike Flowers conducts worship.  The worship is conversational in tone and combined with lots of fellowship.  “Many of you have been following the progress on Arthur Hall. It is finished and we have now had four worship services and two meals since Easter. It has be a blessing to be able to share God's word and the love of Jesus Christ with our faith community,” said Mike Flowers.

The 2016 Miracle Offering calls for giving 10,000 Hours of service to Dakotas Conference ministries. Each is asked church to identify 10 or more people who will each give 10 hours of their time to one of the ministries in the Dakotas Conference.
