Walk to Emmaus Journey

It’s difficult to explain a Walk to Emmaus experience. Some would say a “mountain-top” experience, others would say a renewal of faith, still others would say a deeper feeling of connection to God. I would summarize it in one word—community.

After spending three days with virtual strangers where you eat, sleep, pray, and share ideas, you come to know a whole new community. The fact that there are no outside influences like cell phones, newspapers, television, or family connection you are thrown into an artificial way of life. Let’s face it, those distractions are always there when you are in the “real world”.

But being surrounded by Agape love, working through scripture, concepts, and how to project those feelings in an artistic way helps you to strip away some of the biases and quick judgments that those distractions instill in us. You find yourself able to see the face of Christ in those around you. Not just the ones who are feeding you and providing your every need before you need it, but the ones that you thought instinctively you were not going to relate to on any level. You build that community and you are in harmony.  Not that there aren’t rough spots, but you learn the love of Christ prevails in all situations.

Of course most would say that this community you have built is a “secret” one that you have to be invited into and not all are welcome or even considered for membership. Nothing is further from the truth.

Leaving Walk to Emmaus you are tasked with taking this community into the world to share with all you encounter. It is called the 4th day. A difficult day to live and it covers the rest of your life. Not only do you share that community, but also that gift that you have honed, the stripping of biases, the fog that lifts, that Agape love. Seeing the face of Christ in everyone you meet.
